Robotech was made by Harmony gold and was a copy of japans Macross. There basicly the same but in Macross some pplz names are different, some dont die like in robotech, and some new scenes.

and most imporatantly Robotech cuts out of Macross material after the war ends (Robotech is 3 jap series jammed together and changed to make sense). there are 13 eps or so at the end of macross that are not in Robotech. In my personal opinion macross is much better than Robotech although lots of people like it more for the nostalgia.

Just want to ask: Which version is this? Secondly, which remastered version is being mentioned here? Is it the version by Animeigo?

One thing to be noted is that the Japanese audio track is extremely louder then the localized audio track.

This is the most availible version, however quality wise it can't even be compared to galaxy network :(
I just compared the releases...

White Base - crappy denoising, sharpening and bluring filters. Noise in japanese Audio
Galaxy_Network - Clear Image, no forced filters, Clear Audio.

White Base has crappy remastering for dvd... seem slike Galaxy_Networks uses remastered version for blu ray.
Not really fault of white base ofcourse, since their releases are much older.
Still Galaxy Network's releases are hard to get, only 1 seed on their torrents.. download is slow... i hoped baka bt would have them :(

As for translation, both have original story instead of butchered robotech version.
So if you don't want to wait forever on galaxy network torrents this is the version to get. However if you care about quality you should go for galaxy network. Though they've released only 27eps atm.

another nice one! a subtitled version of macross is something ive been looking for a while as every time one was released domestically it was always associated with robotech. while i enjoyed the one as a kid and a young adult (through RPGing the paladium system, fusing robotech, Rifts, Macross II, Ninjas and superspies and Heroes unlimited into one giant gaming universe) ive never seen the original series.

I want to thank the encoders for their efforts and want them to know their work was GREATLY appreciated!

Not true. Robotech includes all 36 episodes of SDF Macross (check the list at http://robotech.com/infopedia/episodes ), with only minor changes aside from the translation manipulation on the term "protoculture," in the interest of linking the three concatenated series. I believe that later home video versions of Robotech even restore the few cuts that had to be made to satisfy US TV syndication censors in 1984 (and Carl Macek managed to retain much more than any other producer in bringing anime to US broadcast television -- most notably with the unveiled handling of death).

Most informed critics of the Robotech translation make a lot out of the small details, such as the insertion of a line into a MOSPEADA episode attributing an order to raze the planet to Rick Hunter (Hikaru Ichijyo) being viewed as horribly out-of-character.

Then there are folks who apparently never bothered watching the Robotech version at all, but have to slam Carl Macek and Harmony Gold because it's the otaku thing to do.

Galaxy Network uses the recent Bandai Visual R2s which have a heavy handed restoration in terms of color accuracy. Animeigo's is a bit less fargoing in the restoration, but has more image area and splice removal. BV is more modern looking, reminding me of the oversaturated colors of ADVs restorations of Southern Cross and Mospeada (I wish they had the promo they showed me at a con on the dvds. The color difference was almost disturbingly too high (like the contrast changes on recent R2 restorations). AE is probably more accurate to period look (aside from some washed out colors like a grey VF that should be brown). They are, however much better encoded than this. Having the Animeigo DVDs, I can see from the screencaps how much filtering has gone into this. Really smeared out the fake grain AE put in. Glad I have the DVDs instead. Judging by the audio complaint made, they probably used the ADV discs, which had inferior audio masters next to Animeigo.

The restored cuts on "later home video versions" of Robotech was mostly a marketing ploy by HG when they released the series remastered. It's painfully obvious, as some of the cuts are plot points (like Hikaru confessing to Minmay in 27). These were put back in regardless of the new plotholes they created (like Rick wondering if he should do something he's now already done). I wish I'd asked Mecek about that when I met him. So more was cut then you think, to say nothing of how dialog can change things (Globals spiel about the need for colonization becoming a petty "we must strike them before they strike us" bit). So it was far from minor. nothing against Mecek, but Harmony Gold needs to move on. They take way too much advantage of their limited fanbase and add to the reasons why 7, Zero and Frontier will never come over here.

I compare this apples to apples with the [A-M] release. This one is much clearer

New to the series, but which is better? the dub version of this or the sub?

This is very much true. If it wasn't for Carl Macek, we would not have had the influx of anime that we did starting in the mid to late 80s. he was the one who decided to take three already epic stories, and put them together into an even more epic storyline that lasted generations. I'm a child of the 80s, and I'll always love Robotech for what it did. I was one of the first 10 people to order Shadow Chronicles a few years ago as well. I also love Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada in their non-Robotech forms. I guess that keeps me out of the group of elite purists.

Now, one question I've always thought about: What would Robotech have been like, had Macek decided to to use Orguss over Mospeada, instead of the other way around?

I'm downloading the Galaxy Network's ones now. According to their site they'll probably finish releasing in April.

Enjoying this very much, bringing back memories of when I first watched Robotech. The original Macross is not that much different from what Macek did to have it fit in. Anyone that says Macek ruined Macross really needs to look at things with a much more open mind.
